LABOUR HISTORY
Series One: British Labour Party Research Department Memoranda & Information Papers, 1941-1979

Part 1: Research Department Memoranda, July 1941 - December 1961

The Labour Research Department evolved from the Fabian Society Research Bureau and was the principal fountainhead of policy ideas within the Labour Party.  They produced over 100 'Memoranda' in a given year, each of which vigorously examined a chosen topic and proposed a policy.

Part 1 supplies over 2,000 research memoranda produced between July 1941 and December 1961.  A detailed listing and subject index appears on Fiche 1-11.

  • This is a crucial source for understanding the development of the post-war welfare state by Labour.  What ideas were considered and rejected?  How carefully were the plans costed? Was the Beveridge Report fully embraced?
  • These papers also reveal extensive plans to nationalise banks and major industries so as to control the economy and the means of production.
  • There are proposals affecting Advertising, Agriculture, Animal welfare, the Arts, Banking and Finance, Consumers, Defence, Economic policy, Education, the Environment, Europe, Fuel and energy, Health, Housing, Human rights, Industrial relations, Inner cities, Law and order, Leisure, Local government,
Microelectronics, Northern Ireland, Pensions, Prices and Incomes, Public expenditure, Race Relations, Science and technology, Shipbuilding, Social Security, Taxation, Trade Unions, Transport, Unemployment and Women.
