LABOUR HISTORY
Series One: British Labour Party Research Department Memoranda & Information Papers, 1941-1979

Part 2: Memoranda, January 1962 - May 1970, with Information Papers, 1969-1970

The Labour Research Department evolved from the Fabian Society Research Bureau and was the principal fountainhead of policy ideas within the Labour Party.  They produced over 100 'Memoranda' in a given year, each of which vigorously examined a chosen topic and proposed a policy.

Part 2 supplies over 1,500 research memoranda produced between January 1962 and May 1970.  A detailed listing appears on Fiche 190-191. There is material on:

  • The way in which Labour Party ideals were recast during Harold Wilson's leadership.
  • Britain's entry into the EEC and discussions of Common Agricultural Policy.
  • The impact of Britain's European alignment on the Commonwealth.
  • Industrial relations, nationalised industries and economic problems.
  • New technology and Education.
  • 'The Future of Broadcasting' and the importance of Media and Communications in political and social life.
  • The Cripps' report on 'Discrimination against women'.
  • Race relations.
